PRIMA Conference 2018: Building Connections for Public Entity Risk Management

The Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) Annual Conference is an event the PMA team never misses. The conference provides an unmatched opportunity for over 1,000 PRIMA members and associates to network and discuss risk management challenges facing public entities, as well as the most effective solutions available. This year, the PRIMA Annual Conference was held June 3 - 6 in Indianapolis.

Deep educational insights

The conference provided several formats for educational sessions to suit different attendee needs, from 30-minute “cram sessions” to 2.5 hour workshops, all focused on public entity risk management. Workers’ compensation topics ranged from best strategies for return to work to PTSD among first responders. Other hot topics included creating a great workplace culture within public entities and reshaping traditional wellness programs. Speakers also discussed conflict resolution alongside creating better access to mental healthcare for employees and how to manage generational differences among public entity workers.

Keynote speaker David Sears, member of U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6, lent incredible insight into strategic planning through the eyes of the military. He urged us to start every challenge with the endgame in mind and ignore the noise that can distract us. This resonated with other topics of discussion throughout the conference, including Dean Coughenour’s (City of Flagstaff) session on maintaining a strategic approach to claims management and the importance of effectively executing workers’ compensation basics.

Opportunities to connect

For me, the PRIMA conference is a perfect opportunity to touch base with the people our company serves and to meet new friends. I met with dozens of our clients, and enjoyed discussions with our broker partners on the risk management challenges facing public entities.

Our client and broker reception at Shula’s Steakhouse was one way Old Republic Insurance Group (PMA Companies is part of Old Republic) facilitated conversations and networking at the PRIMA Annual Conference. As a long-term PRIMA Conference sponsor, we are proud to assist the efforts of the PRIMA team and help make the annual national conference possible. We share PRIMA’s mission, and appreciate the opportunity to exchange ideas and solutions with risk managers. We look forward to seeing our colleagues and friends at future PRIMA conferences.
