Atlantic Health System Case Study

The Challenge

A self-insured health system, Atlantic Health System's (AHS) own in-house Occupational Medicine Service (OMS) and Occupational & Environmental Safety Department oversee employee health and safety. In recent years, an increase in workplace injuries and a lack of dedicated resources to aid injured employees' recoveries saw the cost of workers' compensation claims escalate. The teams jointly instituted several mitigation measures and in 2015 conducted a "Lean Project" to further analyze, understand, and enhance their workers' compensation program.

Partnership Results

  • Hired an RN Workers' Compensation Case Coordinator who works directly with PMA focused exclusively on injured employees' recoveries
  • Instituted an ongoing Slips-Trips-Falls Injury Prevention campaign and annual Employee/Nurse Safe Defense training
  • Ongoing Safe Patient Handling Program has resulted in a notable reduction in patient handling injuries
  • Employee injury rate down 11% 2015-2016 while facility and employee numbers grew
  • Workers' compensation claims costs down 61% since 2014
  • Medical costs down 54% since 2014
  • Lost work days reduced 80% since 2015

2016 Teddy Award Winner

2016 Risk & Insurance Teddy Award

Atlantic Health System was recently recognized by one of the most coveted award programs in workers' compensation. For more than 20 years, Risk & Insurace has used its Theodore Roosevelt Workers' Compensation & Disability Management Award (Teddy Award for short) to recognize exceptional workers' compensation programs. Each year, the Teddy judges independently review applications, looking for innovation, flexible approaches, and sustainable results. Atlantic Health System's commitment to employee health and safety, unique in-house workers' compensation case management, and sustainable program results landed them a 2016 Teddy Award Honorable Mention.

Atlantic Health System says...

"OMS is very proud to accept this honor on behalf of AHS. The institution of the RN Workers’ Compensation Case Coordinator has lead to the continued success and improvement of our workers’ compensation program."

Linda Reiher, APN
Manager, OMS, Atlantic Health System

"As a result of the AHS/PMA partnership, OMS continues to provide excellent patient care while effectively managing workers’ compensation injuries and minimizing costs."
