The Challenge
Five years ago, Valley Health System set out to transform its workers' compensation program. They instituted comprehensive return-to-work initiatives, three-times-a-year claims reviews, clinical case management, a full-scale Safe Patient Handling program, a Workplace Violence Team, hired a Workers' Compensation Care Coordinator, and launched a health and wellness program. Today, its workers' compensation program is achieving outstanding results and recognized as a best practices model.
Partnership Results 2012-2016
- Nearly 70% improvement | OSHA incident rate dropped from 5.72 to 1.76
- 54% decrease in number of lost-time claims per year
- 69% reduction in workers' compensation budget - while FTEs rose 14%
- 1,684 | Number of employee wellness program participants, an 88% enrollment increase since 2012
- Care Coordinator who helps employees recover, return to work sooner, and feel truly cared for in the process
2017 Teddy Award Winner
Valley Health System recently earned one of the most coveted honors in the workers' compensation industry. For more than 20 years, Risk & Insurance has used its Theodore Roosevelt Workers' Compensation & Disability Management Award (Teddy Award for short) to recognize exceptional workers' compensation programs. Each year, the Teddy judges independently review applications, looking for innovation, flexible approaches, and sustainable results. Valley Health's transformation into a best-in-class workers' compensation program, sustainable safety results, and direct impact on employee wellness landed them a 2017 Teddy Award.
Valley Health System says...
