The Challenge

Clemens Food Group produces some of the most trusted brands in the food industry: Hatfield MeatsCFG-logo
and Farm Promise. In 2016, Clemens’ leadership enacted systematic changes to their workers’ compensation program, including partnering with ECBM Insurance Broker and PMA Management Corp., for a comprehensive claims and managed care program. Their approach incorporates wellness, occupational health and safety, claims and
disability management, and return to work. Since that time, Clemens has achieved remarkable workers’ compensation outcomes, including cost savings during a time of significant workforce growth.

Partnership Results

2016-2018
  • 38% decrease in lost-time claims
  • 29% reduction in average paid per closed lost-time claim
  • 68% medical cost containment savings
  • Total incurred decreased by $1.9 million

2019 Teddy Award Winner

Clemens Food Group recently earned one of the most coveted honors in the workers’ compensation industry, the Theodore Roosevelt Workers’ Compensation & Disability Management Award (Teddy Award), which recognizes exceptional workers’ compensation programs. Given annually since 1994 by Risk & Insurance magazine, a leading national publication for risk management professionals, the Teddy Award was named for President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who introduced one of the first pieces of significant workers’ compensation legislation in the U.S. Clemens Food Group’s outstanding workers’ compensation program, including wellness, occupational health and safety, claims and disability management, and return to work earned them a 2019 Teddy Award.

“The key to our successful Workers' Compensation program was working with vendors who understood and embraced our vision. The vision of quality, efficient, and prompt care for our team members was paramount. We thank ECBM, PMA Management Corp., IHS, and Hill-Wallack for their combined expertise and commitment to our program.”

– John Madaus, RN, BA, CCM | Workers' Compensation Manager | Clemens Food Group

“When we first started working with Clemens in 2016, they were seeking to improve their workers' compensation claims performance. Since that time, Clemens, PMA Management Corp., and ECBM partnered to redesign their claim service platform, eliminate inefficiencies, reduce costs, and dramatically improve the quality of service and care for injured team members. I can’t think of a more deserving employer to win a Teddy Award.”

– Brian Chance | Vice President | ECBM Insurance Broker
